New readers sometimes write in to ask what, precisely, this newspaper means when it reports that the currency is "still working". It is a fair question. Here is the answer.

**Payments go through.** A person sends money, and the other person receives it, usually within a couple of minutes. Nobody has to approve it. Nobody can reverse it. Nobody in between sees it.

**The books balance.** Every computer on the network agrees about which payments happened, without any of them knowing who made them or how much they were for. That sounds impossible; it is merely mathematics, and it has held every week we have checked.

**Nobody is in charge.** There is no company to fail, no office to raid, no switch to flip. The network is the people running it, and the people running it appear to have no intention of stopping.

**It costs almost nothing.** The fee on a typical payment would not buy a stamp.

That is all "still working" means. We appreciate that it does not sound like news. We would argue that a thing which was supposed to be impossible, and which then simply works, week after week, without anyone's permission, is the only story worth covering. So we cover it. Weekly.
